National Bio Energy Tongliao Biomass Power Plant Project, China

The Project

The National Bio Energy Tongliao Biomass Power Plant is a renewable energy project located in Horqin District, Tongliao City, Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, China.

The plant uses a high-temperature, high-pressure biomass[1]fired boiler together with a steam turbine and generator to convert agricultural residues into electricity. It is designed to consume approximately 113,000 tons of biomass residues each year and supply approximately 81,000 MWh of renewable electricity annually to the Northeast China Power Grid. By putting this material to productive use and replacing electricity that would otherwise be generated by fossil fuel[1]based power plants, the project reduces greenhouse gas emissions while supporting more sustainable management of agricultural waste.

The Impact

This project will have an immense impact on the region

  • The project is estimated to reduce approximately 69,809 t CO2-e per year by supplying renewable electricity to the Northeast China Power Grid and displacing electricity generated predominantly from fossil fuels.

  • Approximately 113,000 tonnes of agricultural biomass residues are utilized each year, principally corn straw that could otherwise be dumped, left to decay or burned in an uncontrolled manner. Using these residues for power generation provides a productive alternative to agricultural waste disposal

Sustainable Development Goals/Outcomes

  • The productive use of agricultural residues reduces uncontrolled open burning. The project’s environmental assessment also identifies measures including bag-type dust removal equipment to control particulate emissions, while the naturally low sulphur content of biomass helps limit sulphur oxide emissions.
  • Helps reduce reliance on fossil fuels and support a more sustainable & diversified electricity supply
  •         Creates direct and indirect opportunities through biomass collection, transportation and plant operations. Local farmers can generate additional income by supplying agricultural residues, while suppliers, transporters and other local businesses benefit from economic activity associated with the plant.
